Michael Jerome Oher (born May 28, 1986) is a former American football offensive tackle who spent eight seasons in the National Football League (NFL), mostly with the Baltimore Ravens. He attended the University of Mississippi, where he was a consensus All-American, and was drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Tennessee Titans and the Carolina Panthers.
Oher signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Carolina Panthers on March 6, 2015. Despite his problems in Tennessee, Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman stated that Oher would be the Panthers’ starting left tackle heading into the season “We conducted our research on Michael and are confident that he will provide us with an answer. We’ll put him in at left tackle and go from there.” Oher credited Cam Newton as an influence in his choice to sign with Carolina, and Oher reacted by having one of his greatest seasons as a professional, guarding Newton’s blind side.
Denise Oher: Where is Michael Oher’s mother now?
According to the NY Times piece, Michael Oher’s father was murdered in prison when he was a senior in high school. He had previously shared a cell with Denise Oher’s brother.
Because of the lack of interaction between Michael Oher and his biological mother Denise while he was growing up, the Tuohys took him in in 2004. Denise, however, has provided Michael’s perspective to numerous media outlets throughout the years.
Michael’s biological mother was a guest of honor at a Super Bowl viewing party in downtown Memphis in 2013, when the Ravens won the Super Bowl. Denise told a local station (via Action 5 News) at the time, “I’m proud of him. I adore him, and I will give all the credit for his achievement to God. I’m ecstatic, and I’ve been ecstatic since they won. “I had a feeling he’d do well in athletics.”
