According to Constance, Tate’s malignity is due to his naturally poetic, emotional instability, hence why he adores and craves the independent strength of Violet Harmon, leaving Tate an easier target for hellish conduicy.
Although Constance frequently made excuses for Tate, calling him a “sensitive boy”, she became verbally abusive toward him when he failed to “grace the world with his gifts”, causing Tate to resent her for feeling unable to meet his mother’s expectations.
Following the shooting, Tate returned home and was killed by a SWAT team in his bedroom. Since then, he has resided in the house as a ghost, used by the estate’s malignant influence to serve as a pawn for a larger, more sinister goal.
Tate tells Ben that he didn’t take the medication because he was afraid his ‘big dick’ wouldn’t work and that he had met someone. Tate is sitting with Violet in her bedroom after his second session with her father.

Tate is a dark and manipulative boy, though he can be exceptionally charismatic and likeable, like most psychopaths. He has a hatred for his mother, Constance, born out of her negligent parenting and the verbal abuse she constantly dealt him as a child in her drunken alcoholic rages. Despite her disapproval, Constance frequently makes excuses for him, calling him a “sensitive boy”. Tate can quickly become enraged when someone or something he cares about is threatened. To those unfamiliar with his past, Tate feigns ignorance of his current state of existence.
