Nora Forster was a remarkable figure in the music industry, known for her contributions as a music promoter, actress, and model.
Her legacy continues to inspire many people to pursue their dreams in the music industry.
Nora Maier Forster was born on November 6, 1942, in Munich, Germany. She was born into a wealthy publishing family, and her father, Franz Karl Maier, was the editorial manager of the magazine Der Spiegel and ran the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel. Forster was educated in Munich and developed an early interest in music.
After completing her education, Forster began working for her father’s media company. However, she soon realized that German society was too restricting for her creative spirit, and she decided to move to London with her daughter in the latter half of the 1960s.
Forster began her career as a music promoter in Munich, where her home became a meeting place for “rock royalty.”
Some of the acts she worked with in Germany were Jimi Hendrix, Wishbone Ash, and Yes. However, she found that the music scene in London was more vibrant, and she decided to move there with her daughter.
In London, Forster’s home in Shepherd’s Bush became a crash pad, salon, and meeting place for rock musicians.
She helped to financially support the punk bands The Slits, the Sex Pistols, and The Clash. Her daughter, Ari Up, was the frontwoman and singer of The Slits, and Forster played a pivotal role in guiding her musical pursuits.
Forster was known for hosting numerous musician house guests, and among them was Neneh Cherry, the teenage step-daughter of Don Cherry. Cherry performed backing vocals with The Slits for a time.
Forster was married twice in her life. Her first husband was Frank Forster, a German popular music singer, with whom she had a daughter, Ariane, better known as Ari Up.
After her divorce, Forster began dating Chris Spedding, a well-known musician and rock music producer.
However, her most famous relationship was with John Lydon, the lead singer of the Sex Pistols, whom she married in 1979. They married in Düsseldorf, and Lydon was 14 years her junior.
In 1988, Forster and Lydon were scheduled to travel on Pan Am Flight 103, which was bombed over Lockerbie, but they missed the flight due to packing delays.
Forster and Lydon became the guardians of Ari Up’s twin sons, Pablo and Pedro, in 2000. Later, they became the guardians of Ari Up’s third child, Wilton. Ari Up died in 2010 at the age of 48 from breast cancer.
Forster was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2018 and lived in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, with Lydon as her full-time caregiver when he was not on tour. She passed away on April 6, 2023, at the age of 80.
