Obituary | Colin Alevras, New York Chef And Restaurateur, Dies At 51

Colin Alevras, creative chef and restaurateur from New York, passed away at age 51.

Both the intimacy and some of the eccentricity of the First Street premises they converted into wine bar were lost. The list now includes wines from other countries. After the birth of the couple’s second child, Ms. Alevras primarily left the restaurant. But the dining room continued to draw guests because of the food.The Tasting Room earned star from the then-New York Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni in 2006 for his statement that “many New Yorkers rightly realize that no restaurant digs deeper into the dirt or penetrates deeper into the forests than the Tasting Room.”The larger eatery didn’t last long. According to Ms. Alevras, both locations had their doors shut due to the disastrous 2008 financial crisis.When plans for two more eateries, one serving brunch all day and night and the other serving Cuban cuisine, fell through, Mr. Alevras left the kitchen but kept his innovative techniques. He was the first drinks director at Daniel Boulud’s now-defunct casual downtown eatery DBGB Kitchen Bar, which was among the first establishments in New York to serve wine on tap.He later took position as beverage director at David Chang’s now-closed Má Pêche restaurant in Midtown, where he created list of Jura wines from eastern France at the height of their popularity. He then went to work as the service manager at Dutchman Andrew Carmellini’s SoHo restaurant.
