Obituary | Derek Ross Sterling Dies in A Fatal Accident , How Did He Die?

The Durham Police Department has identified a man fatally shot Tuesday night as 41-year-old Derek Ross Sterling.

Officers responding to a call in the 3600 block of Hillsborough Road at 6:17 p.m. found a man, now identified as Sterling, with a gunshot wound, The News & Observer previously reported.

Emergency medical services workers pronounced him dead.

Investigators are now looking for a metallic gray sedan that may be a 2018-2020 Acura TLX with a sunroof, police say.

The Tuesday incident was was the second fatal shooting in Durham in the last week. On Aug, 24, Brian Davis, 51, was shot and killed on Liberty Street.

In addition, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of Ralph Logner II whose body was found Monday night on Junction Road. The Sheriff’s Office has not said how he died or declared his death a homicide as of Thursday afternoon.

As of Aug. 13, there had been 149 people shot in the city of Durham, 25 of them fatally, the Police Department’s latest statistics show.

There have been more than 460 shootings — incidents in which a gun was fired — in Durham since the start of the year.
