During this time, she started a songwriting connection with Pride’s guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman, and the two began performing their own sets during Pride shows, supported by Pride’s rhythm section. Sade and Matthewman, along with keyboardist Andrew Hale, bassist Paul Denman, and drummer Paul Cook, formed Sade in 1983 after her solo performances of the song “Smooth Operator” gained the attention of record companies.
